End of a Semester...
Hey everyone,
We really want to thank everyone who has so graciously supported us during these last 6 months in New Jersey/NYC area. We have seen God move here in unprecendented ways as a result of prayer. Thanks so much for everything--for keeping up with us, to encouraging us with random emails, gifts, letters, phone calls, replies, and so much more.
The last Well Gathering was a success. I felt like we have made some good strides in the direction of college ministry having established a solid core of emerging leaders who we have seen grow so much and guests taking part in our gathering every time! Also, our youth Bible studies have given our youth more substance than just social events all the time, and while our youth ministry still has alot of kinks to work out, we feel that its going well. Most importantly, we are also seeing our church slowly but surely grow and the mindset of our leaders is gradually moving towards a more missional/service focus. We have seen our church really extend itself to the Garfield community this year like never before. These are huge prayer requests we have had and have asked you to pray for. All we can say is thank you, but there is still so much work to do. Please continue to journey with us here.
On Wednesday, December 21, we are leaving for Texas. We are driving to save money and because the next month is crazy with conferences, flying and driving back and forth between Dallas, Fort Worth, Nashville, and New York City.
Over the past couple of weeks we have had about 10" total of snow. It's been really cool to see it all. It's weird because it doesn't melt here, it just keeps adding up!!! We took some really cool pictures at a park by our house the other day.
Our Schedule for Christmas:
Justin:
12/21-1/1: DFW
1/2-1/5: Nashville (Passion Conference)
1/6-1/9: New Jersey
1/10-1/15: Dallas
Angela:
12/21-1/1: DFW
1/2-: New Jersey
If you want to hang out, please, please, please let us know. We would love to!
We love you guys. Merry Christmas.

The First Snow
As i write this, we are expecting 5 to 7" tonight and tomorrow as well. Hate to make all you Texans jealous, but we have seen more snow in two days than nearly 22 years in Texas.
We love you guys,

Soon means Two Months
Hey everyone,
We have been telling you that we will update this blog soon. Apparently that means two months. That was the last time we updated this thing. Angela and I are doing well; we just returned home from a much needed Thanksgiving break.. We gorged ourselves with turkey and dressing for three straight days and the other two days had some Texas Roadhouse and some authentic Mexican food. Oh yeah, we got to see our families too!!!
Seriously though, it was a great break. We had forgotten how great Texas is! Hanging out with our families for those few days was awesome! On a side note, it was so good for Kyleigh to experience grass and other dogs, both of which were entirely new to her urban life. Also, the weather was beautiful–50 degrees warmer in Texas than at the same time in New Jersey.
Our college ministry is rockin’ along. We started this summer with nine students and are up to around 65. (Although the most we have ever had attend a gathering is about 30). I really feel that we are beginning to make a ripple in the landscape here in the community with our church and with the college ministry. We have students coming from at least four different campuses and we have talked to several others who are going to hopefully join us this Sunday night.
On Halloween, we turned our church property into a festive carnival complete with a moonbounce. We met about 500 people from the community and established relationships with many of them. It was really good for our church. I firmly believe that the best way for a church body to be healthy is by taking care of others. Churches exist to reveal God’s glory to a fallen world and one of the best ways to do that is to serve our communities. With this being said, our prayer for our time here in New Jersey is to help BCI in this area. We want to see the image of the church changed. Not that people in the community think poorly of BCI, but most don’t think anything at all because they have never seen us. We are in the works of planning several more community outreach projects. We really desire to see God use BCI to reach hundreds even thousands that live here in Garfield.
To change the subject, On Columbus day, Angela and I got the day off and go to take a two-day, one-night road trip to Vermont. It was incredible. We got to see some awesome fall foliage, hang out in the mountains, pick apples in upstate New York, and just relax for a day. It was really cool. The Northeast has some beautiful landscape, especially in the fall.
We are so encouraged by everyone who reads this blog. We thank you for your support, your
prayers, your encouragements, and your commitment to partner with us in ministry here. Please pray for us this week as it is huge! I am wrapping up two classes at Southern and have lots of reading and two papers due by the end of the week. Also, I have to prepare a lot of stuff for the church for strategy for 2006. Angela also has a really busy week with her first graders as she is back from a short week with them last week.
Also this week, please pray for the well. {visit the well online}. Sunday night, Aaron Coe, a church planter living in Soho (a really cool area of Manhattan) is speaking at The Well. Aaron is a very gifted speaker and has a huge heart for college students. Please pray that we will be successful in spreading the word and that many will come. Our gathering is on Sunday night at 6:00. Please pray for Aaron as he speaks and for our worship leaders and for everyone person that comes. This is our last official gathering for 2005, so we really want to go out with a bang to build momentum going into 06.
Thanks again for all your support of our ministry and your friendships. Please email us or call. We would love to catch up. We love you guys and will talk to you soon.
For His glory,

A New Addition
Hey everyone,
9.26.05
We have some exciting news! We have a new puppy! Her name is Kyleigh (pronounced ky-lee)and she is an 8 week old beagle puppy. We picked her up on Friday, so the last few days have been crazy trying to train her, get her adjusted to her new home, and take care of her. She likes to howl around 3 a.m. and chew on shoes.
In other news, The Well is going strong. We are through our third week of weekly gatherings and halfway through our teaching series, "what is love?" It's been a lot of fun and hard work. The Lord is certainly blessing it as we recently have seen two Well attendees give their life to the Lord. We have also have seen a core group of people get excited about spiritual transformation of a community(s) around them. Last week, we took the first step in reaching out as we handed out about 750 "rave cards" to students at Felician College nearby. If nothing else was gained, our students are beginning to catch a vision for what we see here in NJ.
Kyleigh just hangin' out...
Angela is into her fourth week as a 1st grade teacher and going strong. Please pray that she would get some rest before long. Our biggest prayer request right now is just for our time and energy. It seems that the busiest time of my week is Saturday and Sunday and hers is the rest of the week and so it is hard for her to recoop on the weekends like other teachers.
To add to the time strain, I began seminary classes about two weeks ago and am already behind. Fortunately, my self-paced online class is taking fall break so there are no new assignments this week, so i can use the next week to play catch up.
We love you guys. Thank you for your commitment to our ministry and our lives. We know that God is answering prayers for us and for this place and for our church.
For His glory,
justin and angela

A Big Week!!!
Hey everyone,
We are in the middle of one of the biggest week in our ministry here! We are in the process of launching The Well, a ministry you have heard about for some time now, but are in the home stretch of launching as a public gathering! This Sunday we are holding the first official public gathering at BCI! We have done a lot over the summer to help publicize this gathering and build unity with the college students and young adults in our church, and now the time has come to officially begin outreach to the campuses and communities surrounding BCI.
Our first message series is entitled, "What is love?" and will focus on the way the world looks at love versus the way God looks at love. We are very excited as we have nailed down most of our plans for the next few weeks. Also, we now have a very talented worship band to lead us. But most importantly, The Well is something our college students and young adults are taking ownership over and really promoting it among their friends.
Also, The Well is adopting a social cause every quarter. The first social cause we are promoting through financial giving, prayer, and service is to help out the victims of Hurricane Katrina. If you would like to help out this cause, please click on this picture:
This has also been a huge week for us as Angela started teaching today! She is teaching first grade at Abundant Life Academy about 10 minutes away in Nutley, NJ. Please continue to lift up our ministry here in the Garden State and in the NYC metro area. Also, please let us know how you are doing, especially if we haven't talked to you in a while. We really miss everyone in Texas!
For His glory,
Justin

Are Tortillas a Dairy Product?
Justin's mom, sister, and Angela!
I had a great time a few weeks ago, as Justin’s mom and sister came to visit. They had never been to NYC before, so we did lots of sightseeing including lunch at the real Serendipity, complete with World Famous Frozen Hot Chocolate for dessert! It was really refreshing to have family here and a good Texas accent to remind us of home!
I got to really be home for a couple of days recently for my sweet Tressa’s wedding. It was beautiful, and I praise God that I could come home for the special day. I had a great time seeing old high school friends and being with my family! A huge thanks to Granny for taking up my dress the day of the wedding; you are the BEST!!!
I am officially going to be a FIRST GRADE teacher!!! I cannot tell you how excited I am to get to begin teaching precious little ones! I know that the Lord has given me this job at Abundant Life Academy for a purpose beyond anything I could ever imagine; it is going to be an awesome year. The staff has been so welcoming and is really making me feel like part of their family already. If anyone has good first grade pointers, please let me know!
Some of our College Students:
Angela and the girls!!!
Justin and the guys!
Please continue to lift up our ministry. On September 11, we are officially launching "the well" a ministry designed to reach young adults and college students. Until then we are busy doing service projects, hanging out with the youth, and organizing for the fall. Also, Justin has been very blessed (but getting fatigued) to have a speaking engagement almost every week! You can visit The Well online by clicking here
This has been a crazy fun week with our church’s Vacation Bible School! Susan and I have taken on the world of 3 and 4 year olds- WOW!!! They are adorable and have really been a joy to teach. I will try to send pictures of this event if I get a chance. We can’t tell you how much we appreciate your partnership in our ministry here! Please keep praying and let us know how we can pray for you.
Love,
Angela

A Long Week
I am writing on a very much needed day off, recovering from one of the longest weeks I have had in some time. Last Wednesday, we took our college students and some of our older youth to a concert and prayer meeting at the Brooklyn Tabernacle. It was not a Brook Tab event, but NHNY (the organization sponsoring us) rented the facility, invited Charlie Hall an amazingly talented worship leader, and led a time uniting college aged Christians from all over the city together. It was a great event, I felt our students really began to catch a vision for taking Christ to their schools and communities. With traffic exiting Manhattan and after taking a student home, I rolled into the apartment about 2:30 a.m. The next day, we awoke at 5:30 to take my mom and sister to the airport. Needless to say we struggled with fatigue at our all day service project.
Sunday, July 31 we had the second official gathering of The Well. Although we had some technical difficulties with sound equipment, overall, it went well. We doubled our attendance from the last meeting, and we once again casted our vision for the fall. We feel very confident that the Lord is going to use The Well to draw many people to Himself! We announced our weekly Well gatherings that will start on September 11.
On another note, Angela and I also have been battling sickness this weekend--Friday and Saturday, Angela had a cold, and Sunday and today, I have felt pretty awful. I know it was totally God's grace getting me through last night.
Please pray for our students and young adults. Also pray for leaders within our students and others that could fill gaps in different areas and lead different ministry teams. Right now, its four of us doing everything. We really need some leaders to step up and fill critical roles in starting a college ministry.
We love you guys and thank you for your commitment to keep us in your prayers. If there is anything you would like us to pray for, please feel free to contact us by email or phone.
For His glory,
Justin & Angela

Angela Finally Writes!
Angela and her mom!!!
Susan, Angela, and Lindsay chillin' at Central Park!
Wow! It is so great to finally be here!! Many people have asked if it feels like home yet, and the honest answer is YES! It is amazing how the place God desires you to be is truly home, and He has caused this little apartment in Garfield, New Jersey to be just that. I am so thankful for my sweet Momma who used a week of her "vacation" to work like crazy to help us set up the apartment and make it feel homey.
A beautiful sunset in NYC!
This past week has been a lot of fun as many of our students are returning from their mission trip to the Philippines. Though they are still battling jet lag, we have been able to hang out with many of them which has really gotten me excited about the potential The Well has to make a huge impact in this area. I had a little taste of home on Wednesday as I got to see many of the students and families from Christ Community while they were in the city for their mission trip. I even got to experience "the secret rooms of Chinatown" with them. What a blessing to see so many youth from back home excited about doing ministry here! You are all welcome back anytime, and you always have a place to stay... well maybe not 29 of you at once!
Yesterday, I got to do one of the things I have always wanted to do! The Leadership Journey (the team that Justin is working with) had a team building day at Central Park, and I tagged along. Everyone was only there for about 2 hours and then all left to do their own thing. Lindsay, Susan, Justin and I stayed around and just layed in the park under a tree reading, singing, and chatting for a couple of hours. It was so much fun! We even borrowed a football from a couple of guys and played a game of catch! The real fun began though when we hurriedly jumped on a train at our transfer station on the way home only to find out it was the wrong one!!!!! We recognized the name of a town that was one of the stops, so we got off, only to recognize nothing and have no clue where we were. Fortunately we have really great friends at church who ended their date early to come and find us at a 24 hour Dunkin Donuts. We frequently laugh at ourselves here, and it is very humbling to have to depend on others so often!
We are looking forward to Jennifer and Janet (Justin's sister and mom) coming to visit today! Hopefully we can get them on the right train to see some sights in the city and do some shopping! Thank you for all of your prayers and support! We love you so much and are thankful to have friends and family like you!

Arriving in NJ, Fireworks, and a State Trooper
Hey guys,
I just wanted to update everyone on what's going on here in NJ. On Monday, July 4, we arrived at our home in Garfield, NJ at 1:00 am. Upon our arrival across the New Jersey border, we were welcomed into the state of New Jersey by being pulled over by a New Jersey state trooper. He was doing a "random commercial vehicle inspection". Basically, he was bored and found something to entertain himself for about 15 minutes.
Later on Monday, we got to see the Macy's Fourth of July Firework Show with about 2 million of our neighbors. Needless to say, it was very cool! During the last week, Angela and I have been trying to settle into our new apartment. Angela's mom came last wednesday to help us out and she is leaving today. She has been a huge help!
Sunday morning, July 10, I had the opportunity to preach. It was a great time and i felt it went well. Thank you to everyone who knew about this and prayed for us during this time. The Lord really answered your prayers.
Please pray for our ministry as we continue to build momentum in starting a college/young adult ministry. Our next gathering will be Sunday night, July 31. We will update you with more prayer requests soon.
For His Glory,
justin

July 10 Sermon
Living a Missional Lifestyle
Sharing the Gospel in Your Culture
John 10:10-10-16
Two Sundays ago, Pastor Jerry launched a series speaking on missions. In the past couple of sermons, we have dealt with everything from being called to be a missionary, to living a lifetime of missional living, to giving and supporting others who have sensed the missional calling on their lives. What I want to do this morning is to help you become a missionary, not overseas only, but in everyday life. As seen from so many scriptures in the New Testament, we are going to talk about this morning, the urgent calling on our lives to share the gospel in our culture. When we understand God’s heart for His glory and the joy of His people across every tribe, tongue, and nation, we will start to see the urgency on our lives to proclaim the Gospel. And in fact, we know that the word nations in the Greek (ethna) isn’t referring to groups of people bound by political and geographical boundaries; what it is talking about is cultures. How beautiful is it that God has called not just people from the North Eastern Culture or the Filipino Culture or the Southern Bible Belt culture, but he has called men, women, students, and children, from every culture. So let’s go to the text and read about what I’m talking about.
Read John 10:10-16.
This passage may sum up the mission Christ came to this earth to accomplish more than any other in the Word of God. What we are going to do this morning is walk through this text, and draw from it, how it is that we share the gospel in our cultures. So let’s pray and ask God to do mighty things this morning and that we would be doers of His word.
Pray
If we want to share this gospel we are talking about the first thing we are going to have to do is to live the gospel. The word gospel is literally translated good news. So what is the good news? Simply this. Let’s read verse 10:
“The thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy. I have come that they might have life. And have it abundantly.”
This is a huge verse. You might find this verse on more Christian tee-shirts, coffee cups, I mean, come on--we put this verse on our church van. So obviously we not only believe it, we are living an abundant life in everything we do, right? I mean Christ came for that purpose according to verse 10, so why do we struggle so much with this. We claim this verse, memorize it, display it, teach this verse to our children, but we fail to really walk in this verse. I mean this next statement with all my heart. If we are sharing the Christ Jesus the way, the truth, and the life, and our lives look no different from anybody else’s except maybe we don’t drink, smoke, or cuss, what part of that does the world want. A basic response from a conversation with someone who needs Jesus would look something like this: “So you’re telling me that I can’t get drunk, I can’t do drugs, I can’t have sex with whomever I want, in fact I can’t do anything that brings me pleasure, and yet your life is just as screwed up as mine. And you want me to believe in Jesus? No Thanks.” And I think that many of you have been taught your whole life that being a Christian is about delayed gratification. This concept of delayed gratification is not necessarily a bad thing, but from this verse, we know that Jesus came not to give us a terrible life now a home in heaven. He came so that we may live abundantly! And so you would probably say to this person something to this effect, “yeah, but you get to go to heaven.” Please don’t miss hear me…If that was all Christ promised, it would be so, so, so, much unfathomably more than enough. But I believe passionately, that He has promised us so much more. Do you believe me? Let’s look. If you have your bible, turn with me to the book of Jeremiah, chapter 2, verse 13.
“For my people have committed two evils, they have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters. And they have built for themselves cisterns, Broken cisterns that can hold no water.
So what we have here is God proclaiming to Jeremiah the sin of Judah. That they have turned from the Author of Life, the only one who can give anything that truly satisfies, and they built for themselves idols ands gods who don’t give any pleasure. Isn’t this the story of the Old Testament? A group people chosen by God to follow Him; this goes good for a while, but then they turn and worship idols—golden cows on the foothills of Mt. Herod, Baal, Asherah, and many other gods. But this was 3000 years ago and this spirit is dead in Christianity, right? I don’t think so. And so how does this manifest itself in the 21st century. Here’s one example. Last year in the United States, the pornography industry made more money than all four professional sports combined. I mean is that unbelievable or what? That blows my mind. What does that say? I think it means that a lot of men and women are digging and digging, it’s good for a while, but what are they finding? Just sand, the water that was so good is now just sand. What is the fundamental difference between God and gods in Jeremiah 2? This—God is a fountain, a well, a spring that never stops, is always flowing, always bringing life, and always pure. What is a cistern? A cistern is a reservoir, a holding tank, something that man digs, and it is meant as a temporary holding place for water. God refers to all others that the Jews placed their hope in as broken cisterns that can hold no water. Isn’t that awesome? That God is actively seeking worshippers and giving them the thing that they are most looking for: pleasure. I think this is so different from how many of us view Jesus. We see Him as not as the Giver of joy, but the taker of everything that previously gave us joy and pleasure. However, if we are not living a lifestyle that is constantly being filled with the living waters of Christ Jesus, and full of joy, what is going to stop them from digging? Nothing. And I think that maybe even a lot of us are digging in some area, and we know that it’s not satisfying us. I just want to contend to you this morning, that if you are not living the gospel you preach, your words are impotent. If you are not dwelling in the infinite abundant life of Christ, but digging a cistern that the thief has told you is better, or if you are not drawing from the well, but trying to adhere to a strict moral code, two things are going to happen: you are going to find this life very frustrating, and you are going to fail in engaging your culture.
This brings me to my next point. So lets go back to the text. John 10:11-14
“I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. He who is a hired hand, and not a shepherd, who is not the owner of the sheep, sees the wolf coming, and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them.
The second point, the second thing we must do in order to share the gospel is to Follow Jesus. And live by the example that He set. Acts 17:26 says this:
“And He (referring to God) made from one man, every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation.”
According to this passage, not only has God created all men, but he has appointed where each one is to live. In fact, Ephesians 2:10 tells us that we are created by God to do good works which He prepared for us in advance. In God’s perfect foreknowledge, He created us, set us apart as His child, and gave us a mission. And what’s the mission. Simply, let’s look up to our brother, our coheir, Jesus. We see here that He defines a missional lifestyle. He came to this earth to accomplish a mission. We have seen this in John 10, now let’s look at another passage in John 6:35-40.
Read John 6:35-40
It’s clear that Jesus came to this earth to accomplish a purpose, to rescue His own, right? And we have a mission too. To make disciples--simply to lead people to the saving grace of Jesus Christ. To live lives that point to our beautiful King in everything we do and say. Let’s look at another familiar passage of scripture. It’s found in 1 peter 3:15.
“Set apart Christ Jesus as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you.”
Man, I don’t understand why so many Christians have watered this verse down to use as combat for arguing atheists on the existence of God. That’s not what its talking about is it? No. It’s talking about non Christians being baffled and dumbfounded by the hope that those who are partaking in the Life of Christ experience. If you are a follower of Jesus Christ, do not leave here thinking you have the okay to not proclaim the gospel with your mouth. You do! But what I am saying to you this morning is that if you are living a life so filled with Christ and so full of joy even in the worst of circumstances, people are going to ask. And that’s when: you profess the reason for the hope that’s in you. That’s what this verse is telling us. So if we are to share the gospel in our culture, not only do we have to live the gospel, we have to follow Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith, for the joy set before Him, endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of God. If we had time, I could take you to so many places in the Old and New Testament where men and women of God are losing everything, getting beaten, being killed, dying of hunger, thirst, seeing their families taken and they still to cling to the Joy of knowing Christ and making Him known. And when that happens, the Gospel is no longer a spark, but it spreads like wildfire, consuming everything in its path. And its beautiful.
Alright, so looks look at one more thing, and we are done. To share the gospel in your culture, you must engage the culture. Engaging the culture means stepping out of your comfort zone of BCI and meeting, building relationships, and sharing Christ with those that need Him but would never step foot in the door of a church. So how do we do that? Let’s read the last verse of our scripture this morning and see what Jesus is telling us.
Verse 16 says, “I have other sheep, which are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will hear my voice, and they will become one flock with one shepherd.
This is one of the first references in His ministry that Jesus Christ makes to the global calling of the Gospel. If you remember, he tells his disciples in Matthew 10, to only go to the lost sheep of Israel. But here in John 10, Jesus is hinting at the proclamation He will make at the end of His time on earth, what we know as the Great Commission.
So how does this verse get accomplished? Lets look one of the last things that Jesus said before the crucifixion. Its found in John 17, and it’s a prayer, not only for Himself, but an intercession for His disciples, as well as for us. Lets go there, John 17: verse:15-18.
Ok, if you haven’t listened to anything I have said today, hear me out on this and will done. According to this passage, it was never the intention of God for His children, His sheep to form for themselves an entirely different, set apart sub-culture; rather, it is His desire that we engage the culture that He has placed us in. Going back to John 10:16, Jesus tells us that He has other sheep not of this fold. In fact every fold, every culture, contains Jesus’ sheep. So answer this, if we are not actively engaging our culture, and instead we are forming a culture for ourselves complete, how are the sheep lost in the culture going to hear His voice. They’re not. Cultures are dangerous, are they not. In fact, Jesus told his disciples he was sending them out as sheep among wolves. How dangerous is living a missional lifestyle that engages culture? Usually when you put a sheep in the middle of a bunch of wolves, it doesn’t go well for the sheep. So how do we not get eaten in engaging culture? Christ prays for us. He prays that we will be protected from the evil one. In fact, Romans 8 tells us that He is actively interceding on our behalf. Isn’t that cool? That we can be the voice of Christ and that others will hear that voice and follow Christ. When we live a life that is full of the abundant life Jesus came to give us, when we follow Jesus and the example He gave for us during His time on earth, and when we go out from our comfortable pew in BCI and seek the lost sheep in our folds, we are truly living a missional lifestyle, and I don’t know of a greater calling. Let’s pray.

On the Road Again...
Just wanted to update you on a couple things...
1. concerning the well. Our first meeting went very well. We had nine college students and our team. We ate pizza, worshipped through music, and talked about our vision for launching a young adult minstry through BCI (the well). We also talked about small groups and starting those up. Pray that the Lord ignites a fuel in their hearts to catch and spread the vision we casted.
2. concerning our travel to the Garden State. We are leaving today complete with a 16 foot truck and all we own. Pray that we make it safely back to Garfield and that the Lord protects us and the millions of other drivers on the road this weekend. Our estimated time of arrival is late tomorrow night or we will stay in Virginia or the DC area on Sunday night and make it there sometime on Monday.
We love you guys.

THE WELL--FIRST GATHERING MONDAY NIGHT, JUNE 27 @ 8:00
Hey everyone! Please be praying about this. We have not publicized this gathering to the community--only the young adults who are part of the local church. We plan to hold our first publicized gathering sometime in September when the fall semester starts. Pray that I convey the vision clearly and correctly and that young adults will desire to be part of this ministry. Pray for us as we launch our small groups ministry. We currently have one small group. Our desire is that everyone who comes to the well gatherings will be plugged into a small group to grow spiritually, fellowship, and serve together. We will let you know how it all goes in the near future.
For His glory,
Justin

The Great Adventure
For His glory,
Justin
"How sweet all at once for me to bid of those fruitless joys which i had once feared to lose. You drove them from me, You who are the true, the sovereign joy. You drove them from me and took thier place, you who are sweeter than all pleasure".--Augustine
