It's A Keeper June (x 2)

This recipe comes from the Highlights High 5 magazine. If you are not a subscriber and you have a preschooler- I would HIGHLY recommend it as a Christmas present, maybe from grandma... Nana gave it to Elizabeth for Christmas, and it is so great! She thinks it is so cool to get her own magazine in the mail, and the content is excellent. There is always something fun that is recommends. Elizabeth has gotten pretty good at following a recipe thanks to High 5. Our most recent adventure was Sweet Smelling Play Dough!

Play Dough

Ingredients:
2 cups water
1 pkt unsweetened koolaid
2 T vegetable oil
2 cups flour
1 cup salt
4 t cream of tartar

Child:
Mix together 2 cups of water, the drink mix and 2 T vegetable oil.
In a 4 qt pot, mix together 2 cups flower, 1 cup salt, and 4 t cream of tartar. Slowly add the liquid to the pot and stir.
Adult:
Cook the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it is the consistency of mashed potatoes. Remove the dough from the pot to cool. (I put mine in the refrigerator.)
Store in a ziplock bag.
- It makes A TON! Great for a play date to send some home with a friend.
-Or, for a really stormy night... that is when we made ours and had so much fun!

The second recipe is from my friend Christine. When I got married, Christine gave me one of the best gifts, a recipe book filled with her tried and true favorites! I recently made dinner for my friend Jen who had a baby and needed an easy dessert to make to go with it, and decided on Goodie Bars. Jen really liked them, and I had forgotten how much I enjoyed them myself:)

Goodie Bars

Ingredients:
1 stick butter
1 box yellow cake mix
1 egg

4 cups powdered sugar
1 t vanilla
1 8 oz pkg cream cheese
2 eggs

Preheat oven to 325. Melt butter in a 9X13 dish in preheating oven. Pour melted butter into large mixing bowl, leaving dish "greased". Combine cake mix, 1 egg, and melted butter. Stir well and pat mix into the dish. Separately, on low speed, mix powdered sugar, vanilla, cream cheese, and 2 eggs. Pour over base. Bake one hour or until golden brown. (I pulled mine about 10 minutes early.)

Happy baking!

Pictures- what you really want!

Elaine
After bath pics are some of my faves, and I realized that we don't have too many of Elaine! The flower towel is a definite fave too!

So, about a week ago, I asked Taber to borrow a pan, and we were looking for it in her kitchen. When we came outside, we found Elaine SOAKING WET and two little girls standing over her with watering cans! Lizzie and Addie had been "watering Elaine!" Now Elaine is no pushover- she lets you know when she doesn't like something, and we hadn't heard a peep out of her. Lizzie and Addie did both get timeouts though and were threatened that this should NEVER happen again. Here is my soaked little girl.
Although she can walk now, the grass just feels too good not to crawl, crawl, crawl!

Elizabeth and Elaine
Lizzie really likes her hat... Elaine wouldn't keep a hat on if we duck taped it to her head!!Lizzie was sitting at her table eating lunch, when Elaine decided to join her. Lizzie shared her sandwich, and they were quite content for a good while! I hope this is a good indication of their future bond!
Lainie loves to snuggle, and Lizzie loves to give hugs- great combo!

Elizabeth
Lizzie has a really cool Daddy who asked her on a date to the Rangers game and gave her this awesome new shirt to wear to the game! The only problem was that Lizzie is in her I ONLY WANT TO WEAR DRESSES phase:) The only way I could get her to put it on was to promise she could wear whatever she wanted to bed, and she didn't forget! She wore one of her prettiest dresses to sleep last night. However, she did have a change of heart on the shirt and wants to wear it again today.
Every Tuesday night at the Ballpark, kids get in for free! This was Lizzie's first baseball game, other than the CityView softball games where she just gets to run around with all of the other kiddos. Justin said she did well, but after the 6th inning, she said, "Daddy, I'm all done playing baseball." Thankfully I had thrown a few books in the backpack which carried them through another couple of innings!
Blake and Lana are in our CityView lifegroup (we meet at their home). We love the Clark family! Blake and his wife Erin are also Aggies, so we have that common bond as well!
I think Lana and Lizzie did quite a bit of entertaining eachother too! It looks like everyone had a great time!

You Know You Want One!!!!

Well, I have a good number of talented friends from whom I get all kinds of fun stuff! Here is a quick overview of where things come from...

Dressed Up Dots
Martha and I go back to our days at A&M where we were in Phi Lamb together, served alongside one another in Impact, and just were like minded good friends. Martha blessed us greatly by singing at our wedding, and now has a super cool business! My first purchase from Dressed Up Dots was my necklace with Lizzie and Lainie's names on one side and Blessed on the other. I also purchased personalized Nana and Grammy necklaces for mothers day! She has a great selection of necklaces already in stock or she will work with you to create whatever you so desire-- all out of dominoes, hence "dressed up dots!" I get compliments on my necklace ALL THE TIME!!! You know you want one!

Ketchy Kouture
Kerri is one of the first people I met at CityView Church. Since we met 3 years ago, we have become good friends through ladies Bible study, serving together, and through being walking buddies. Kerri has inspired many CityView women (including myself) to venture into the world of sewing, always having the cool personalized gifts at baby showers and birthday parties! When I was at a loss for my mom's birthday, I called Kerri. She put together a cute NANA tote bag with a cross on it that I was able to fill with fun things for my mom. It was perfect! Kerri has all kinds of things available and will work with you to personalize the perfect gift. Just take a look at her site! You know you want one!

A Bit of Panache
Rebecca is one of those people CityView just couldn't do without! She has that creative decorator eye that has been great as we have gotten into our building, plus she is an elementary school teacher who loves kiddos and has a heart to serve the Body. Since I have known her, she began dating and married her husband Scott, and they are now expecting their first child! Rebecca has always been great about loving and taking care of the pastors' families at CityView, especially at Christmas. This past Christmas, we received an awesome personalized sign that now has a perfect spot in our kitchen. She can make a sign for any occasion to match whatever color scheme you so desire- talk about great gifts! You know you want one!
Now you know all my secrets! Happy Shopping!

Break My Heart for What Breaks Yours!

I love times of corporate worship, especially at CityView! Lately things have been just a little crazy at CityView though- a good crazy- we are maxing out all of our kids' rooms! This however means I am typically running around on Sunday mornings like a crazy woman trying to make sure everything is covered, so I haven't had much time in service. This Sunday, I did manage to make it in there for a couple of songs, one of which was Hosanna. I love this song, and through many factors of late, the line "Break my heart for what breaks Yours" is particularly challenging. How often do I seriously ask the King for a broken heart? I just finished reading Same Kind of Different as Me, a must read if you have not already! I am not a very fast reader, and it took me less than 3 days to read it (Lizzie may have watched a couple more shows than usual on those days...) Anyways... there is a character named Debbie, and she is a woman who truly was so in tune with the Spirit that her heart genuinely broke for the things that break the heart of God. Not only did she allow her heart to be broken, but she was a woman of action and of faith concerning God's heart. Oh, Father, I long to, like Debbie, be broken for the things that break your heart and then to walk in faith and act as your Holy Spirit leads, abandoning all fear and selfishness.
For a good while now, God has been opening my eyes to the needs of single parents and parents who have moved here from other countries. It truly does break His heart that children are not getting the appropriate health care and nutrition, simply because no one has explained how to apply for CHIPS or WIC. His heart is broken that little boys and little girls are growing up without a daddy or any other male influence, making it very difficult to believe that a heavenly Father loves them. He is heart broken when parents escape to America for a better life for their children only to run into deception and all the cards stacked against them. I have envisioned a parenting center, complete with adult ESL classes, assistance in applying for government services, parenting classes, etc- a place that offers HOPE! While I am quite sure that this will one day come to be, I have been realizing that right now, God is still providing many opportunities to minister to hearts. It is really a matter of me walking in the Spirit and pushing aside my selfish agenda. There are mommies all around me that need a word of encouragement, a breath of hope, an advocate! Oh God, continue to break my heart for what breaks yours- so much so that I cannot help but walk in faith and action for your namesake!

Here are the lyrics to Hosanna- I would highly recommend purchasing Life Light Up by Christy Nockels- this is just one of many incredible songs!
Side note- as we have been singing this song a lot lately in our home, I love to hear my Lizzie belting it out! However, Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna in the Highest has become- Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna in Ohio :) Oh I love that girl-I suppose He is in Ohio too!

I see the king of glory
Coming on the clouds with fire
The whole earth shakes
The whole earth shakes

I see his love and mercy
Washing over all our sin
The people sing
The people sing

Hosanna
Hosanna
Hosanna in the highest [x2]

I see a generation
Rising up to take their place
With selfless faith
With selfless faith

I see a near revival
Stirring as we pray and seek
We're on our knees
We're on our knees

Heal my heart and make it clean
Open up my eyes to the things unseen
Show me how to love like you have loved me

Break my heart for what breaks yours
Everything I am for your kingdoms cause
As I walk from nothing to
Eternity

Happy one year Lainie K!

What a difference a year makes!
I realized that I never posted my birth story for Elaine, so here it is- you are under no obligation to read this, but I needed to write it out before I forget it!
May 31, 2008, I awoke around 3 am shocked by the pains I was having- could these really be contractions?  I was a week away from my due date!  I fell back to sleep only to be awakened again by the same intensity.  Having prepared myself for natural childbirth by reading the Bradley Method (HIGHLY recommend this read for any pregnant woman!), I decided to just relax and sleep as much as possible between the contractions.  Around 6:00, I realized that today was going to be the day, so I jumped (as much jumping as any 9 month prego woman can d0) into the shower.  I made it through blow drying my hair with minimal interruptions from the contractions, and then laid back in bed to continue dealing with the contractions.  By about 7:30, things were heating up, so I decided to wake up Justin (he is quite the heavy sleeper!).  His loving response was, "Oh, you're ok baby."  Once I really woke him up, he said he wanted to time a contraction to see where we were.  I do not remember how long it was, but long enough for him to realize I was serious, and we needed to get going!  Due to some crazy circumstances,  we couldn't get a hold of my parents to come stay with Lizzie and had to call a neighbor to go tell them!  They finally arrived around 8:30, and we were out the door.  I had a contraction or two in the car, but I was able to walk when we arrived at the hospital.  I calmly informed the nurse at the nurses station that I was in labor, and she began to direct me into a room.  I quickly collapsed onto the bed to have a contraction, while she decided she wanted to move me to a bigger room- that was NOT going to happen!   A nurse came in and said something about me getting into a gown, but my contractions were so on top of each other that it took quite awhile for me to get it on- she was annoyed and asked Justin if I was sleeping when she came in during a contraction!  Justin was a great advocate for me through the whole thing and explained that I was just trying to make it through a contraction:)  When they finally checked me, I believe I was at a 7.  They offered drugs, I declined and continued to worship Jesus and thank Him for the privilege of giving birth through each contraction.  The stupid fetal monitor kept messing up because I was laboring on my side, and again the nurses were annoyed, and again Justin came to the rescue and rigged up some pillows to make everyone happy:)  The Dr on call came in and checked me and said to let him know when I felt like I needed to push.  Soon after he left, I told Justin I needed to go to the bathroom.  He, being a VERY smart husband went and got the nurse.  She returned and informed me that I did not need to go to the bathroom, but instead needed to have a baby!  Dr Ryan returned, I pushed twice and Elaine arrived at 9:36 am, less than an hour after I was admitted!  The nurses went crazy, because I guess they see very few natural births where the mom actually stays in control and does it well.  Overall- a great experience!
Elaine was VERY allert and immediately nursed.  She weighed 7lb 5 oz and was 21" long with a perfectly round head- not much pushing makes for a pretty baby:) Meanwhile, Justin called family and shocked them that Elaine had already arrived:)  What a great day!

Fastforward a year, and we have a very tenacious one year old beauty!  Elaine is so funny!  She has incredible personality and determination- she is going to challenge me as a mommy!  Her vocabluary is emerging; here is a list of the words she says, momma, dada, no, uh oh, all done, more, dog, diaper, that, milk, mmmmm, hi, bye bye, thank you, patches... and I am sure there are others she is attempting but we just have no clue what she is saying:)  Elaine took her first unassisted step just two days before her first birthday, and on Monday she took 5 consecutive steps and continues to walk more and more.  I have a feeling it won't be long until she is all out running everywhere she goes!  Her hand eye coordination is excellent; she will seriously throw a ball to you with great accuracy.  In the past couple of weeks, she has decided that fruit isn't so bad, and she will now eat strawberries, grapes, and occasionally dices apples.  Otherwise, she is eating pretty much whatever we eat. For example, Breakfast: multigrain cheerios and yogurt or an eggo waffle and applesauce, Snack: graham cracker, cheese, maybe some fruit, Lunch: turkey or ham with cheese and some bread or pasta or spaghettios, or grilled cheese, Dinner: whatever we are having with a big girl cup of whole milk (she still nurses at breakfast and lunch time).   Sleeping lately has been about 9 hours, wake up to nurse, and then go back down for another 2-3 hours, not quite as good a Lizzie was, but not terrible either.  I think the girl just has a mighty high metabolism!  We went for her 1 yr well check yesterday, and she weighs 18 lb 9 oz and is 28.5" long.  That puts her in the  14th and 43rd percentile repectively!  Dr. Scroggie says he is not at all concerned though, because she is "as strong as an ox!" in his words; yes, she gave it to him during her exam!  So, Elaine Karis is going to be our little fireball!  Our prayer is that God would teach us how to harness her personality into something beautiful for His glory- that Lainie would be a passionate woman on fire for the things that burden her great God's heart!
We were able to celebrate Elaine's big day in a very special way!  Since her birthday fell on a Sunday, we did her baby dedication at CityView on her birthday.  It was really special, and we feel so blessed that we will not raise Elaine on our own, but we have the support of the precious body of Christ at CityView- it is so good to have these people to run with through life!  We were also joined by all of Elaine's grandparents and great grandparents which was especially great.  After church, we had a group of friends and family over and enjoyed lunch together.  Elaine did not like the stickiness of her homemade strawberry cupcake, but the taste made up for it, and she ended up with cake icing behind her ear!!  Thanks to everyone who helped us celebrate!  A year later, I say the same thing, What a great day!

A birhtday cinnamon roll to start the day!

Elaine, meet Patches (We began a tradition with Lizzie. Once we find out if we are having a boy or a girl, we make a build a bear, and then give it to them for their first birthday!) It is really fun, and I think Elaine really likes Patches- she has been saying "Puh-es"

All done partying!
