19 Months

Not only was Tuesday tax day, but it marked 19 months of life for Elizabeth! She is so much fun these days that it is hard to pick out the highlights! Her vocabulary continues to increase and her ability to associate things is growing as well. For example, when she sees a red light, she yells, "Yed- STOP!" She is starting to really get colors but still struggles with the in between ones like lime green or blue violet- how do you explain those?!? The sunshine and the moon are two of her favorite things, and she loves to locate and follow the moon on our evening family walks. She has just begun to really show an interest in her babies and takes very good care of them, hopefully a sign of her being an excellent big sister. Her "girliness" is emerging in her LOVE for shoes, a bow in her hair, and insisting on using my make up brush while I put on my make up. She has mastered buckling and shows some signs of OCD by making sure she buckles back the straps of her booster seat as soon as she gets out. She has become a confident climber and loves to climb up on our bed for family snuggle time each day when Daddy gets home from work. Her attention span is continually growing and thus the number of books we read in one sitting is growing as well! Elizabeth's will is strong, yet she aims to please Mommy and Daddy. A minute in time out is torture, because she knows she has disappointed us. She is such a sweetheart, and we are thankful for her snuggles, kisses, and loving disposition.

Today we had lots of fun with the girls! Emma came over for some good play time with Elizabeth and Madalyn. This weather is awesome, so a good part of our time together was spent enjoying bubbles, sidewalk chalk, and the sunshine! Of course, everyone was way too busy to even look at the camera!

Finger Lickin' Good!

Last Friday we had a fun night with friends, old and new (well, newer)! God is so cool how he weaves our lives together in various seasons. In college, Justin and I were in leadership for Impact, a ministry for incoming freshmen. During that time, we became friends with Matt and Sarah, and now, we are at CityView where we have become friends with Adam and Taber. Crazily, Matt and Adam were good friends back in high school, and we all live relatively close together now. It was a fun night for the "grown ups," and Elizabeth and Addison enjoyed their play time as well.


In preparation for the night, I decided to make some brownies! Elizabeth was eager to put her apron on and help as well. (My belly gets in the way and quite messy these days if I attempt baking without an apron.) Elizabeth was great at stirring and pouring, and I even taught her the naughty trick of licking your fingers when you get a little on you! However, after the brownies were in the oven, and I allowed her to join in the licking of the bowl, she looked and me and said, "Nana, peas, peas!" (translated- Banana please!) As crazy as I thought she was, a banana she received! I smiled and thought, I have done something right; she likes the stuff that is good for her! She has not been completely corrupted by the sugar bug!

God is SOOOO GOOD!

So, when Elizabeth was born, she was covered for a year under medicaid because of all of our crazy insurance stuff moving to Texas from New Jersey. NICE! When she turned one though, she no longer qualified, but they said we did qualify for CHIPS. This was all well and fine, until we realized that Dr. Scroggie, also my childhood pediatrician, did not accept CHIPS. I was so sad, but decided we could deal with a different doc and save a lot of money on insurance. Well, Elizabeth has not needed to go to the doctor for the past six months- HUGE PRAISE! When it came time for her 18 month check up, Justin said we could just pay out of pocket for Elizabeth to have her well check with Dr. Scroggie, whom we really trust. I had called in advance to find out the cost, and we had planned to pay for the visit in full today. When I arrived though, the receptionist said she could not accept money from me, because Elizabeth is on CHIPS. I started stressing thinking that we may not be able to have her appointment. However, she then informed me that their office is in the intermediate stages of signing with CHIPS, and if Dr. Scroggie okayed it, they could see her under CHIPS. Thankfully Dr. Scroggie is the BEST and said that would be fine, so we had a great appointment and walked out without paying ANYTHING!

At Bible study recently we were discussing the disciples lack of understanding of Jesus as their provider. Just after they watched him feed over 4,000 people with just seven loaves of bread and a few small fish, they are all stressed out because they only have one loaf of bread for their journey. Jesus responds with "Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand?..." God clearly showed up today as our provider, and I pray that I would be reminded of this and many other instances where He has clearly come through the next time I am worried about "bread." Are you trusting God as your provider?

I went prepared to pay, but not prepared to wait...no favorite books or toys:( But, several silly songs, a sticker from the wonderful recptionsit who helped with insurance stuff, and the digital camera came through! Here are a few naked shots while waiting in our room.

3 Years, 18 Months, 28 Weeks

This past week marked 3 years of marriage for Justin and me, 18 months of life in this world for Elizabeth Grace and 28 weeks of my pregnancy!

For our anniversary, Justin and I went out to Rockfish for a nice date (Thanks Momma and Daddy!), went and picked out a new kitchen table (a very grown up purchase), and completed the evening at Babies R Us testing out double strollers (where the nice lady assured me this stroller was great fro TWIN babies- and Justin assured me I did NOT look that big)! It is amazing what God has done and how much things have changed in our three years of marriage. We had a great time celebrating eachother and how He has grown us tremendously in our time together!
This pretty little girl is about to go get her 18 month pictures taken. However, a severe case of bed head and the remains of her peanut butter topped blueberry waffle called for a bath before the main event!
She cleaned up nicely, and the results were just precious! Elizabeth wore her beautiful dress that Daddy bought her and smiled like a champ! Nana and I practiced self control though and only purchased the $9.95 package which comes with more pictures than we have friends! May I recommend Portrait Innovations for your next photo shoot! They do a great job and are cheap... if you have a little self control:)

As for baby news, I go to the Dr. tomorrow for my lovely glucose test. Yea for drinking a half liter of overly sweet Gatorade! We will keep you posted.

A Montage of my Thoughts

Okay, so I probably could post several different posts, but instead, I am going to cram it all into one! God has been showing me some precious truths lately, and I thought I would share a little.

1. He is better than... Girl Scout Cookies and Butterfinger Hot Chocolate on a SNOW day!
We are at a really exciting crossroad in our life as the Bassett family as well as the CityView Church family! Interestingly, it is the same type of decision to be made on both fronts. Justin and I have been blessed by our family to be paying really cheap rent on our great home in south Fort Worth for the past two years, but we have come to a time where we feel God giving us the green light to move up to the Keller area! This means we get to be first-time home buyers, which is super exciting but honestly makes me VERY nervous. CityView has been renting space on Sundays for the past two years from the Keller ISD and is now being led to seek out permanent space to minister better to the community- also an exciting but challenging adventure. For this reason, Rick, our lead pastor asked the body of CityView to take a day this week to fast and genuinely seek the Lord's face; together, our LifeGroup chose Thursday. Carrying a sweet little punkin in my belly who needs daily nourishment, I decided to fast from the sweets that seem to be extra yummy during pregnancy! Somehow, a single Girl Scout cookie in a package was left, and it called my name often during the day. It was a valuable tool to turn my eyes to the King and really ask His will for Justin and me as well as for CityView. Throughout the day, God brought me to some precious stories in His word about the way that He carries out His plans for the good of His people and ultimately for His glory. The verse that penetrated my heart the most though was a simple but strong statement in 1 Corinthians 2:16- "But we have the mind of Christ." There is a lot of places this took me, but ultimately, it reminded me that as a follower of Jesus, I have the Holy Spirit as well as the Word of God which both give me insight into the thoughts, affections, and desires of my Lord. As Justin and I seek out potential homes for our family, God has given us the ability to discern what is wise as well as really great parents and friends to guide us in this new process. As CityView seeks out a new location, He has given the leadership and membership this same mind of Christ to see things from His perspective and make wise choices! What an incredible honor and responsibility we have as a follower of Christ. Thank you Lord for allowing us to have the mind of Christ and to access your vision for our lives and your Kingdom.

2. How well do we celebrate?
And for that matter, how well are we teaching our children to celebrate? Sure, we have birthday parties and serve up the cake and ice cream, but do we genuinely celebrate the life of that person and thank God for what he has done in and through him or her in the past year? We cheer like crazy for our favorite team, but how well do we celebrate the daily accomplishments of those around us. Unfortunately, too often we are consumed by self and fail to be an encouragement to those around us. I must confess that this is often where I find myself- too busy with my own stuff to stop and acknowledge the growth and success of my family and friends, or even worse, I am competitive and rather than celebrate with them, I sulk in disappointment that I have not achieved the same.

Our great friend, Susan, came all the way from New York to visit us a few weeks ago, and we had a great time! While she was here, she taught Elizabeth how to "CHEERS!" with her sippy cup. We laughed about it at the time, but it got me thinking about how well we celebrate with her. I desire Elizabeth to grow up being celebrated for who God created her to be as well as celebrating her Creator and Lord, but how is she going to know how unless she sees it being done well by Justin and me?
I am so thankful for our community at CityView where we have learned from those around us about genuine celebration. At Christmas, as a gift from many of the members, all of the pastors and their wives were able to go out for a nice dinner and celebrate God's goodness as well as to be celebrated for the ways God is using us. Justin and I left that night extremely blessed, encouraged, and refocused on ministry, and this challenged us to celebrate others well. Celebration takes on a wide variety of forms, and I know I have much to learn. It is my desire to grow in this area and for our family to practice celebration in such a way that it points others to Jesus.

3.Ladies, listen to your hubby- especially when you are pregnant!

Alright, so this won't be too thought provoking, but hopefully you will get a giggle! Somehow, as I get older, my desires for birthday and Christmas gifts have gotten rather practical and boring to most. For my 25th birthday, I asked Justin if I could get new glasses! Though he thought that was pretty lame, he agreed, and off we went to Costco where I have gotten glasses in the past and been pleased. While I was looking at glasses, Justin and Elizabeth browsed the exciting aisles of the superstore! After a good deal of searching, I found the perfect pair and took them to get Justin's approval. When I tried them on for him, his response was, "They look good, but they look a lot like your old ones." I assured him that they were similar, but they were different enough. We went ahead and purchased the glasses, and they sent them off to have the lenses put in. I was so excited when they came in, and I couldn't wait to sport my new specs! Upon getting them home though, guess what? I am now the owner of two identical pair of glasses!
Grrrr... my sweet husband was right! Why didn't you listen to your hubby, Ang? I am stubborn, and pregnant or not, I think I know best! I guess I learned my lesson:) Thankfully, Costco has a 30-day customer satisfaction policy and is allowing me to bring them back and get something a little bit different!

Snow Day!!!

What a crazy state in which we live! Today I decided to take the girls to the mall for a little play time with their friends Mattie and Cooper. We had a really good time. I only got one pic though, because they were all too busy to stop for photos! Elizabeth loved the slide!

When we decided to leave, I noticed it was "raining", so I got the girls bundled, and we made a run for it. We quickly realized that the "rain" was in fact sleet, and it hurt! I was really surprised that the weather had changed so quickly.
As the girls napped, I enjoyed a beautiful display of snowfall!! Sadly, the good stuff was over by the time they woke up, but the effects were obvious. Elizabeth was very eager to get outside, so as soon as Daddy got home, out we all went. However, my Texas girl was not as pleased once we got out in the cold!

She was much happier inside with her Aunt Jenn and her milk!

I Love Wednesdays!

Alright, call me crazy, but I eagerly wait in anticipation for Wednesday. On Wednesday, my circulars arrive, and I get to see what kind of bargains I can find for the following week! I have decided to note a few of my good finds for anyone who is interested. The only thing is, the prices are only effective in the DFW area. However, it is likely that the same kinds of things are on sale nationally based on season or manufacturers' discounts.
If the item is a national brand or a type of produce, WalMart will price match, except for buy one get one offers. This is how I cut down on grocery trips! I simply circle the item and note the price at the top of the ad. When placing my items on the counter, I put my price matched items last and inform the cashier that I have price matched items.
If it is a store brand or buy one get one offer, you will have to actually visit the store by which it is advertised. Often, I look for whoever has the most deals on things I need and visit that store during the week. Look closely at the ad, because sometimes deals are restricted to a 2 or 3 day special sale!

17 Months and Other Happenings

Elizabeth is every bit a toddler on a mission! Her vocabulary continues to grow, and she is putting phrases together more and more. She has also realized relationships between people; for example if I say, "Nana," she will respond with "PawPaw and Pepper." Her oldest child tendencies are showing up a lot, as she likes to be in charge! Just the other day she told kids who were being rowdy at WalMart, "No! No!" She also has begun to tell Daddy and Mommy what to do... not too sure how we feel about that! Elizabeth's creativity is blossoming; she loves to see what treasures she can find in the bottom of Mommy's closet and put them to interesting uses. Most things can be a hat of some sort :) Elizabeth is an "equal opportunity kisser and high fiver." Even if Daddy is in another room and I get a kiss, she runs to find him to share the love- so sweet! She has had fun hanging out with friends of ours lately and showing off her knowledge of body parts, animal sounds, and other feats like dancing and doing somersaults. As the weather gets nicer outside, she is a very happy girl! Outside is her favorite place to be, and she has mastered going up the steps and down the slide on her own at our local park!! BIG GIRL!

In baby news, my belly continues to grow. This baby girl is just as wiggly if not more than Elizabeth was. I will be 25 weeks on Saturday and am feeling great. I love being pregnant, but I do have a few issues... I HATE maternity pants with the big panel! I HATE having to get out of my warm bed to relieve my full bladder at least a couple of times a night! I HATE that my belly button pooches out and is not attractive in fitted shirts! But... I LOVE the truth that the creator of the universe is knitting together a precious child in the comfort of my womb! I LOVE that Justin tells me I am beautiful even when I don't feel like it! I LOVE that in just a few short months we get to meet our daughter!

OK, I must brag a little! I completed my very first sewing project last weekend under the supervision of my talented mother in law. We were visiting Grammy and Pop in Kaufman, and it was a rainy day. I had been asking for a few weeks for her to teach me some basics, so it was a prefect time! I learned how to read a pattern, cut out the fabric, set up the machine (although hers is much fancier than mine!), overcast stitch, put in a hem, put in elastic, and much more! I really had a lot of fun making these crop pants for Elizabeth and was super excited that they actually fit! For my talented sewing friends out there, don't look too closely... I still have lots to learn. The top that accompanies the pants is a bit more complicated, but maybe with some help I will master it next time. Thanks for the lessons Grammy!



Justin is doing well. He continues to work at Accel where he does pretty much everything in and out of the office to keep things running! He also had the opportunity to attend an executive pastors' conference in Dallas a couple of weeks ago, as he is now assuming that role at CityView. Elizabeth LOVES her Daddy, and I LOVE to watch and listen to them play together!


As most of you know, Kyleigh's long lost cousin, Uno, won the Westminster Kennel Show. She was pretty proud of him, even though she knows she is cuter:) Just take a look!

This evening after dinner I realized that when I turned on the disposal, water and debris came up the other side! Yuck! After several attempts to clear it out, Justin decided to become Mr. Plummer. With me as his lovely assistant, he began taking pipes apart and catching water in plastic tubs. Unfortunately, the clog was unreachable. We tried to get a coat hanger through without resolve. Draino was not effective. Finally, in desperation, I held the lid of a cottage cheese container over the opening in the pipe and Justin used the plunger over the drain. When we tested it, no more clog!!!! Amazing what you can do when you are determined not to spend money on calling a plummer.

You know "those" days?

Today began like most days. I got up around 6:45, took my shower and got ready, put a load of laundry in the washer, got breakfast ready for Justin, and had a little Jesus time. Madalyn arrived around 8:00, and we played until Elizabeth woke up around 9:00. This is when the little things began. I realized while I was changing Elizabeth that I had no more diapers for Madalyn, size 2, and Elizabeth's size 4 diapers were not going to work! Ok, I had already wanted to go to Big Lots today, so no biggie! Now it was time for breakfast. I put Madalyn's yogurt on the table, but when I turned around to put Elizabeth in her chair, Madalyn found the yogurt and pulled it to the ground spilling blueberry yumminess all over the floor. Again, no biggie, we can handle a little quick floor clean up. After breakfast, we prepared for our outing to the post office and Big Lots. (Side Note: Getting out today was not the best choice to begin with. We had wind advisory warnings and the local lakes provided conditions suitable for surfing. ) I got the girls all loaded up and was ready to go until I realized I was missing a garage door opener. (Somehow we are down to one, and it was in Justin's truck.) After a stop at Justin's office to grab the opener, we were once again on our mission to the post office. Upon arriving at my destination, I reached into my wallet to grab cash only to find it not there. Grrr... I stuck the cash in the jogging stroller last night for our Sonic trip. OK, debit card. Nope, just changed banks, haven't activated the card and have not a clue as to the obscure pin that was given me. Alright, credit card. Not available either, in Justin's wallet after Sunday lunch with friends. Back to Justin's office we went. Following this, we endured the wind and survived the post office with the help of a few kind strangers to hold the series of 3 doors (not handicap friendly!). Our trip through Big Lots was also pretty successful. I found several good deals on items we needed, and I had a 20% off coupon for my whole purchase:) I believe the total was $12 for 2 boxes of organic mac and cheese, 2 boxes of organic cereal, face wash, diapers, a box of 24 puffs snack packs, and clorox anywhere spray. As we exited the store, the wind again threw us around. I positioned the cart in what I thought was a safe spot and began to put Elizabeth in the car. I got one strap over her shoulder and saw Madalyn and the cart being whipped around and rolling away! I quickly ran to Madalyn and got the cart under control. However, when we returned to the car, I found 4 locked doors with keys and Elizabeth inside!!!! After a moment of panic, I called Justin. He was on his way to a church conference an hour away, but he had only gotten a few miles away. Thankfully, Daddy came and saved the day! While we waited for him to get there, Elizabeth realized that she wasn't buckled and began to stand up, wiggle, and make me very nervous. She never was freaked out though; we just sang and made silly faces at each other and passed the 10 minutes safely. Whew! When I finally got into the car and looked at the clock, it was only 11:53! YIKES... what else was in store?
Thankfully the rest of my day was much better, and I did take a mommy break while the girls napped to watch The Pursuit of Happiness and cried some more.
When all was said and done, I thanked God that Justin was available to come so quickly, and that he had a key, and that Elizabeth was safe in the mean time! I need these humbling days to knock me down a bit from thinking I have it all under control. As a friend so sweetly reminded me tonight- HE is Always in Control!

16 months and Half way through!

Elizabeth Grace is 16 months old and so much fun to be around! She is talking all of the time and LOVES to play with her friends. She still enjoys her food, and her belly is proof. We recently discovered that she is a chips and salsa girl; actually she prefers the salsa, sucking it off the chip and asking for more! Elizabeth's attention span is growing, so we spend many mornings and evenings before bed reading book after book after book. She has come to identify the letter "E" and will point it out whenever she sees it. She also is interested in learning her colors, but so far "yellow" is the only one she gets consistently. Thanks to Aunt Cheryl and Uncle Trey, ELMO has entered our world. Elizabeth's compassionate spirit is already showing; when Elmo is throwing his tickle fit, she picks him up to comfort him by rocking and patting him. She has finally overcome her distaste for things in her hair and on multiple occasions worn bows and pigtails (my personal favorite)!

In other news, I am 20 weeks along and half way through my pregnancy. My body has definitely gotten the memo, so my belly is growing at a quick pace- I will get a belly pic up shortly. I am feeling great and trying to get out for walks as much as the weather permits. My only problem has been some frustrating sinus pressure and headaches, for which I can't take the medicine I would normally. However, my new best friend has become my Neti Pot! If you have never heard of such a thing, you should definitely google it. It is quite a sight when I am using it, but it works like magic! I would HIGHLY recommend you try one out when feeling congested.

Surprise! Surprise!

What an exciting week we have had!
First of all... in case you haven't heard, Baby Bassett #2 is on the way! On Wednesday, we went to the Dr. for our first sonogram. Because of some crazy insurance stuff and switching docs, I was already 14 weeks along, so we thought. As the sonographer began checking out the baby, she commented that she thought I was a little farther along. I didn't think much about it, because I just wanted to see that little heart beating and legs kicking. Well, after all of the measurements and calculations and seeing a perfect looking baby, we were informed that I was 17.5 weeks along instead of 14 weeks! That explained my very obvious pregnant belly!

Elizabeth is going to have a little sister!
We are delighted and now preparing for a June 7 due date as opposed to July 1!

In case you cannot make out Elizabeth's shirt, it says, "I'm the BIG sister." Though we aren't sure how much she understands just yet, she does gives baby kisses and point to my tummy and cheer, "BABY!" I know they will be great friends... and probably have a good share of sister fights as well:)

15 Months plus some...

Well, this update is incredibly late for a variety of reasons, but mainly because we have had to have a funeral for our old laptop. It served us well for almost three years, but the battery quit charging, the CD/DVD drive was fading, the keyboard was finicky, and the last straw was the blank screen I got the morning after I had typed up and carefully edited our Christmas letter. We are so thankful for Christmas money that purchased our new laptop! I didn't realize how connected I was to the computer until I spent two weeks without it!
In the past month Elizabeth's verbal skills have exploded! I cannot even list her words, because they are now so numerous. Thanksgiving and Christmas were a blast with our sweet girl! She is always full of excitement and loved everything about Christmastime. She really loved the jingle bell ornaments on the tree that occasionally "fell off" just for her to carry around. Paw Paw bought her a blow up "peek-a-boo penguin" yard decoration that we opted to keep inside; she thinks it is so funny and still begs for me to plug it in. When the penguin pops out of the ice cube, she shouts, "BOO!" Another favorite was her nativity advent calendar. Each morning after breakfast, she scampered over to it and would say, "Cal, Cal, Cal;" it was so fun getting to daily share with her the truth of Christmas as we added to the scene!
Elizabeth also learned a great deal about sharing in the past month, as I began keeping Madalyn, a little girl 2 days older than Elizabeth. It has been a joy to be home with my sweet girl everyday and to watch her interact with her friend. Ma Ma, as Elizabeth calls her, was a premie and adopted from Guatemala by some of our friends. She is on the petite side, but Elizabeth is so gentle with her and really loves having her around.
